  AFAEMME was invited by the European Commission to attend the large scale conference "Equality between Men and Women in Times of Change"

AFAEMME, the Association of Mediterranean Businesswomen, was invited by the European Commission to attend the large-scale conference "Equality between Men and Women in Times of Change", which took place on June 15th and 16th in Brussels. The meeting was attended, among many other personalities, by Ms. Bibiana Aido, Minister for Gender Equality of Spain, Ms. Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek, Federal Minister for Women and Public Administration of Austria, Ms. Harriet Harman, Minister for Women and Equality of United Kingdom and Mrs. Lotte Greppen Knutsen, State Secretary, Ministry of Children and Equality of Norway.

Both the Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, Mr. Vladimir Spidla and the Vice President and European Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy, Mrs. Margot Wallstram, emphasized the need to progress on gender equality issues by encouraging the active participation of women in positions of decision making in the economy and politics.

The General Secretary of Equality Policies of the Ministry of Equality of Spain, Mrs. Isabel Martinez, said that one of the challenges to be addressed will be the creation of an Observatory on Violence in the European Institute for Gender Equality. The President of AFAEMME, Mrs. Mª Helena de Felipe Lehtonen, also exchanged views with Mrs. Virginija Langbakk, Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality, which was created to give greater dynamism to the EU gender policy.

AFAEMME becomes Member of the Spanish Coordinator of the European Women's Lobby

Last March 28th, AFAEMME become member of CELEM, the Spanish Coordinator of the European Women's Lobby (EWL).

The EWL is the largest umbrella organisations of women's associations in the European Union. Its Secretariat is based in Brussels, but EWL has member organisations in the 27 Member States of the EU and in 3 candidate countries.


The European Women's Lobby aims at promoting women's rights and equality between women and men in the European Union. EWL is active in different areas such as women's economic and social position, women in decision-making, violence against women, women's diversity etc. EWL works mainly with the institutions of the European Union: the European Parliament, the European Commission and the EU Council of Ministers.

CELEM, the Spanish national network coordinator, was presented in the Senate in 1994 and in 1995 the organisation was formally recognised.

AFAEMME is elected to the Board of Directors of ANIMA Investment Network


Women of ANIMA's Board of Directors for the period 2009 - 2011

On April 23rd, the ANIMA Investment Network held in Barcelona its Annual General Meeting and the elections to its Board of Directors.

The event, which took place in the Casa Llotja del Mar, a historical site propriety of the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona, was held with two other events within the framework of Invest in Med: a public presentation of the selected initiatives within the framework of the 2nd Invest in Med request for initiatives; and the Conference of the Union for the Mediterranean on the subject of "The Mediterranean countries and the global economic crisis".

In the elections AFAEMME, represented by Mrs. Mª Helena de Felipe Lehtonen, was chosen Member of the Board of Directors for the period 2009 - 2011 and Ms. Wafaa Sobhy Ibrahim, representative of the Egyptian General Authority For Investment and Free Zones (GAFI - Egypt), was elected the new President of the ANIMA Investment Network.

AFAEMME organizes its Annual General Assembly and the Mediterranean Forum of Women Entrepreneurs in Barcelona on November 5th and 6th, 2009

AFAEMME is already working with ASCAME, the Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce, in the organization of the Mediterranean Forum of Women Entrepreneurs that will be held at Casa Llotja de Mar in Barcelona between the 5th and 6th of November, 2009. The event will coincide with AFAEMME's Annual General Assembly.

The meeting will be attended by Ms. Bibiana Aido, Minister of Equality of Spain, Mr. Kanoun Jarraya, Minister of Women Affairs of Tunisia, Mª Helena de Felipe Lehtonen, President of AFAEMME, and Mr. Murat Yalçintas President of ASCAME, among others.

Third Meeting of the EC's Network of Women in Decision-making in Politics and Economy

Last April, 3rd the European Commission's Network of Women in Decision-making in Politics and Economy held its third meeting in Brussels, and Mrs. Mª Helena de Felipe, President of AFAEMME, participated in the event as a member of the network.

At the beginning of the meeting Mrs. Belinda Pyke, Director of the DG for Employment, Social Policy and Equal Opportunities of the European Commission introduced to the group the new Head of Unit of the Department of Equality between Women and Men, Mrs. Daniela Bankier, who will be replacing Ms. Fay Devonic in this position.

The Meeting's main objective was to discuss how the use of female role models can increase the number of women actively participating in decision-making posts. Apart from this debate, it was also discussed the importance of promoting participation -" between the members of women organisations -“ in the Elections to the European Parliament, which were held between June 4th and 7th 2009.

AFAEMME held the 2nd seminar-workshop of the project "Adding Value, Breaking Stereotypes" that confirmed that the implementation of gender equality plans is a viable option for SMEs in times of economic crisis

AFAEMME organized the event with the collaboration of the Spanish Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Madrid (ASEME-Madrid) and the Organization of Women Entrepreneurs and Active Management (OMEGA) this workshop which had the support of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Social Policy and Sports.

The inauguration and opening of the seminar-workshop was made by Mrs. Marí­a José Pérez-Cejuela, the General Director for Women of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, that reminded that the achievement of gender equality in the workplace is one of the main objectives of the European Commission, which invests in projects that serve as a roadmap so that "national and local governments can implement new policies to improve the situation of men and women in business, promote women's access to leadership positions and to establish the reconciliation of working life and staff. "

The launching and presentation of the event was made by Mrs. Mª Helena de Felipe Lehtonen, President of AFAEMME and Mrs. Inmaculada Álvarez Morillas, President of ASEME Madrid and OMEGA. Ms. de Felipe talked about that in the last 50 years there has been many achievements on gender equality at the social level and especially at work but stressed that there are still two inequalities which need to be overcome. These include the pay gap between men and women and the other is the low representation of women in decision-making processes and economic policies.

That event puts end to the project ''Adding Value, Breaking Stereotypes - sensitizing of the small and medium businesses on the importance of fighting the stereotypes of kind'' is a project developed by AFAEMME with the purpose of spreading data regarding the situation of women in the labour market and the existence of gender stereotypes in Spanish Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and the economic impact that these stereotypes have in different economic sectors. The information disseminated by this project is based on the reports generated by the project "Break gender stereotypes, give talent a chance" which was designed in response to a Call for Tenders financed by the EU PROGRESS Programme in the year 2008 and executed in 15 countries of the European Union.
